பினுக்கெதி ராகும்விழிமாதர்
மிகப்பல மானந் தனிற்புகு தாவெஞ்
சமத்திடை போய்வெந் துயர்மூழ்கிக்
கனத்தவி சாரம் பிறப்படி தோயுங்
கருக்குழி தோறுங் கவிழாதே
கலைப்புல வோர்பண் படைத்திட வோதுங்
கழற்புக ழோதுங்கலைதாராய்
புனத்திடை போய்வெஞ் சிலைக்குற வோர்வஞ்
சியைப்புணர் வாகம்புயவேளே
பொருப்பிரு கூறும் படக்கடல் தானும்

Paraphrase

வினைக்கு இனமாகும் தனத்தினர் வேள் அம்பினுக்கு எதிர் ஆகும் விழி மாதர் (vinaikku inamAgum thanaththinar vEL ambinukku ethir Agum vizhi mAthar) : (Because of my lust for) the prostitutes whose bosoms are the cause of bad karma or action, and whose eyes are like the flowery arrows of Manmathan (the God of Love), வேள் (vEL) : Manmatha, the god of love;

மிகப் பல மானம் தனில் புகுதா (migap pala mAnam thanil pukuthA) : I got entangled in many disgraceful situations; (அவ)மானம் ((ava)maanam) : disgrace;

வெம் சமத்திடை போய் வெம் துயர் மூழ்கி (vem samaththidai pOy vem thuyar mUzhki) : I waged duels of carnal pleasure and suffered miserably drowning in grief; வெம் சமர்(vem samar) : hot/severe fight; here sexual indulgence;

கனத்த விசாரம் பிறப்பு அடி தோயும் கருக் குழி தோறும் கவிழாதே ( kanaththa visAram piRappu adi thOyum karuk kuzhi thORum kavizhAthE) : I became overly distressed; kindly save me from plunging into the pit of a womb (leading to yet another birth);

கலைப் புலவோர் பண் படைத்திட ஓதும் கழல் புகழ் ஓதும் கலை தாராய் (kalaip pulavOr paN padaiththida Othum kazhal pukazh Othum kalai thArAy) : by granting me the art of singing the glory of Your hallowed feet as sung by scholarly poets!

புனத்து இடை போய் வெம் சிலை குறவோர் வஞ்சியைப் புணர் வாகம் புய வேளே (punaththu idai pOy vem silai kuRavOr vanjiyaip puNar vAkam buya vELE) : You went to the millet-field and hugged the creeper-like damsel (VaLLi) of the kuRavAs who wield fierce bows; You have such gorgeous shoulders, Oh Lord! வஞ்சி (vanji) : creeper; சிலை (silai) : bow; வாகம் (vAgam) : beautiful;

பொருப்பு இரு கூறும் பட கடல் தானும் பொருக்கு எழ வானும் புகை மூள (poruppu iru kURum pada kadal thAnum porukku ezha vAnum pukai mULa) : Mount Krouncha was split into two; the seas dried up; and the sky was filled with smoke; கிரவுஞ்சமலை இரு பிளவாகுமாறும், சமுத்திரம் வற்றி துகள் படுமாறும் விண்ணில் புகை மூளுமாறும்; பொருக்கு (சேறு முதலியவை உலர்ந்துபோகும்போது) மேலே வரும் சிறுசிறு மண் கட்டிகள், flakes of mud that has caked up; பொருப்பு = மலை, mountain;

சினத்தோடு சூரன் கனத்(த) தி(ண்)ணி(ய) மார்பம் திறக்க அமர் ஆடும் திறல் வேலா (sinaththOdu sUran kanath(tha) thi(N)Ni(ya) mArpam thiRakka amar Adum thiRal vElA) : when You fought in the battlefield with rage, wielding Your triumphant spear that pierced open the strong and rock-solid chest of the demon, SUran, Oh Lord!

திருப்புகழ் ஓதும் கருத்தினர் சேரும் திருத்தணி மேவும் பெருமாளே. (thiruppukaz Othum karuththinar sErum thiruththaNi mEvum perumALE.) : You reside in ThiruththaNigai where all devotees assemble with the sole goal of chanting Your glory, Oh Great One!
