Ashuddha Vidya Tattvas, Tattvas - Part 2

In the previous post What Are Tattvas? Part 1 , we studied the meaning of Brahman and maya. We also studied the tattvas arising from Shuddha Maya. In this post, we will study the tattvas that are grouped under Ashuddha maya. Let's remember that Tattvas are defined by their exclusive capacity to perform a specific function in the scheme of reality. And as the sole agent or acting force is Consciousness, it follows that the Tattvas are nothing but functions of Consciousness. Asuddha Tattvas or Vidya tattvas Ashuddha maya tattvas cause atma /soul to dwell in all the living things in the universe as an instrument of action. It is associated with Anava mala . This is God's differentiating power of the universe; it makes us see the Super-consciousness or Brahman as being separate from us. Just as the Sun is sometimes obscured by an eclipse or cloud which conceals his radiant orb from human view, God's Infinite, Independent and Free Consciousness appears to become obscured by

Read Part 1 and Part

Shuddha Tattvas, Tattvas - Part 1

Brahman, Tattvas and Soul Brahman is a supreme, universal spirit that is eternal, unchanging and present throughout the universe. It is the root of all that exists in the universe as well as the fabric of all beings. It is the Supreme Entity, which manifests itself into this world and retracts it back into it during the time of the deluge. It is thus the single binding unity behind the diversity in all that exists in the universe. Hindu scriptures describe Brahman as non-dual pure consciousness, infinite, and all-pervading like the sky. Brahman is of the nature of existence-knowledge-bliss-absolute-the ground of all existence, basis of all awareness, and source of all bliss. Brahman has two aspects: transcendent and immanent. In Its transcendent aspect, Brahman is devoid of name, form, and other attributes. But in Its immanent aspect, Brahman is endowed with them. The Upanishads designate the transcendent Brahman by the word "It" or "ParamporuL" in Tamil, and t

Shri T.S.Narayanan is one of the important venerable veterans of Bangalore Thiruppugazh Anbargal group who have made immeasurable contributions to the growth of the Thiruppugazh movement in Bangalore. A spiritual person that he is, he is immensely knowledgeable about Thiruppugazh. These days, advancing age prevents him from participating in various pujas and bhajans. However, he has happily shared with me many of his writings on Thiruppugazh and I take great pleasure in publishing them here.

How Sundaramoorthy Nayanar Brought A Dead Boy Back To Life

The story of how Saint Sundarar brought back to life an eight-year-old boy who had died a few years ago is one of the stories that appears in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. When Sundarar was going to the temple at ThiruPukkoliyur (now known as Avinaasi), near present-day coimbatore, he heard two discordant notes coming from opposite houses – one echoing joy and the other sorrow. When Sundarar enquired, he found out that each of the houses had a son. The two sons had been friends and had gone to the river together. But while one boy was swallowed by a crocodile, the other boy had survived. And after three years, the parents of the surviving boy were happily conducting Upanayanam (Thread ceremony) for their son, while the parents of the dead were wailing over their departed son. Hearing this story, Sundarar went to the place where the boy was swallowed by the crocodile. He sang a pathigam (poem in praise of a deity consisting generally of ten stanzas ), worshiping Lord Shiva to resurrect
