Paraphrase

The events at the scene of death looks a charade. All the relatives gather around the dying person, wailing and loudly chronicling the series of happenings just prior to death. Finally, as the rituals get over, they too leave, apparently unconcerned, unreflecting, and unaffected.

கொத்தார் பற் கால் அற்று ஏகப் பாழ் குப்பாயத்திற் செயல் மாறி (koththAr paR kAl atRu Ekap pAzh kuppAyaththiR seyalmARi) : The neat rows of teeth loosen from the roots and fall; having lost active life, this cloak of a body totters and degenerates; வரிசையாக நிறைந்திருந்த பல் வேரற்று விழுந்து போக, பாழ்பட்ட சட்டையான இந்த உடலின் செயல்கள் தடுமாறி, பற்கள் காலற்று ஏக (paRkaL kAlatru Ega) : teeth loosen from the root, பற்கள் வேர் அற்றுப்போய் ; குப்பாயம் (kuppAyam) : a long robe used chiefly by Mahammadans, a coat/jacket, the slough of a serpent.

கொக்காகிக் கூனிக் கோல் தொட்டே (kokkAgik kUnik kOl thottE) : the hair becomes white like that of a crane; the body develops a hunch-back and leans on a walking stick; மயிரெல்லாம் கொக்கின் நிறமாக வெளுத்து, உடல் கூன் அடைந்து, ஊன்றுகோல் பிடித்து,

கொட்டாவிக் குப்புற வாசித் தித்தா நிற்றார் செத்தார் கெட்டேன் அஆ உஉ எனவே கேள் (kottAvik kuppuRa vAsith thiththA niRRAr seththAr kettEn aA u u enavE kEL) : the head stoops down after a few yawns; many a relatives keeping watch over these wail, making the sounds "a A u u" and lament,"That's how he stood sometime back. and then he died; alas, I have lost him!!"; கொட்டாவி விட்டுக்கொண்ட தலை தொங்கிப் போய் இவ்வாறு மேற்படி நிலை வேறுபாடுகளை கவனித்தபடி நிற்பவர்கள் இறந்ததும், ‘அந்தோ கெட்டோம்! ஹாஹா ஹூஹூ’ என்றெல்லாம் (கதறும்) உறவினர்கள், வாசி (vAsi) : மாறுபடும் நிலை; தித்தா (thiththA) : அனுபவித்து; நிற்றார் (nitrAr) : நின்றார் ; கேள் (kEL) : relatives;

செற்றே சுட்டே விட்டு ஏறிப்போம் (setRE suttE vittu ERippOm) : then walk up to the cremation ground, burn down the corpse, (take a dip in water) and leave that place thinking it's all over; (சுடுகாட்டுக்கு எடுத்துச்) சென்று, அங்கே உடலை எரித்து (அதன் பிறகு நீரில் மூழ்கிக் கரை) ஏறி (உறவு) விட்டுப் போனது என்று செல்கின்ற,

அப்பேதுத் துக்கம் அறாதோ (appEthuth thukkam aRAthO) : will such a silly grief never end? அந்தப் பேதைமை வாய்ந்த துக்கம் நீங்காதோ? பேது (pEthu) : ignorance, simplicity, folly; பேதைமையுள்ள;

நித்தா வித்தாரத் தோகைக்கே நிற்பாய் கச்சிக் குமரேசா (niththA viththArath thOkaikkE niRpAy kacchik kumarEsA) : Oh Immortal One, You mount the peacock with a beautiful and broad plume, Oh KumarA belonging to KAnchipuram! என்றும் உள்ளவனே, விரிந்த தோகையை உடைய மயில் மீது விளங்கி நிற்பவனே, காஞ்சீபுரத்துக் குமரேசனே,

நிட்டூரச் சூர் கெட்டோடப் போர் நெட்டு ஓதத்திற் பொருதோனே (nittUrac cUr kettOdap pOr nettu OthaththiR poruthOnE) : As the evil demon SUran ran in defeat and hid in the sea, You charged up to the wide sea and fought with him! கொடுமை வாய்ந்த சூரன் கேடு அடைந்து கடலிடையே ஓட, போரினை பெரிய கடலில் புரிந்தவனே, நெட்டு (nettu) : நெடிய; ஓதம் (Otham) : கடல்;

முத்தாரத் தோளிற் கோடற்பூ முட்டாது இட்டத்து அணிவோனே (muththArath thOLiR kOdaRpU muttAthu ittaththu aNivOnE) : On Your shoulders, adorned with the pearl necklace, You happily wear the garland of white kAnthaL flowers without fail. முத்து மாலை அணிந்த தோளில் வெண்காந்தள் மலரைத் தவறாது விருப்பத்துடன் அணிபவனே, கோடற்பூ (kOdaRpoo) : வெண்காந்தள் பூ;

முற்றா நித்தா அத்தா சுத்தா முத்தா முத்திப் பெருமாளே.(mutRA niththA aththA suththA muththA muththip perumALE.) : You never age! You are eternally young! Oh my father! You are impeccably pure! You are totally detached! You are the one that can grant us liberation, Oh Great One! முதுமையே வாராதவனே, என்றும் இளமையாய் இருப்பவனே, என் தந்தையே, பரிசுத்தனே, பாசங்களினின்று நீங்கியவனே, முக்தியைத் தரும் பெருமாளே. முற்றா = முற்றாத, முதுமையடையாத; நித்தா = நித்தியமானவனே;
