யாம் ஓதிய கல்வியும் எம் அறிவும் தாமே பெற வேலவர் தந்ததனால்
நாம் கற்ற கல்விக்குக் கைமாறாக அவனுக்கு நமது புலமையை அர்ப்பணம் செய்யவேண்டும்.

It is He who has graciously granted us the boon of knowledge and wisdom.

ஏட்டிலே வரை பாட்டிலே (EttilE varai pAttilE) : In all those songs inscribed on palm leaves praising human beings, ஏட்டிலே எழுதப்படும் நரஸ்துதி பாடல்கள்;

சில நீட்டிலே (sila neettilE) : some of which are sung elaborately,

இனிதென்று தேடி (inidhu endru thEdi) : I thought I found a nice source of income in them and went after rich people. சம்பாதிக்க இனிய வழிகள் என்று பிரபுக்களை நாடி;

ஈட்டு மாபொருள் பாத்துணாது (eettu mA poruL pAththuNAdhu) : But I never cared to share the great wealth so earned. பாத்து உணாது (pAththu uNAthu) : பங்கிட்டு உண்ணாமல்;

இகல் ஏற்றமான குலங்கள் பேசி (igal Etra mAna kulangaL pEsi) : I was simply bragging about how great my lineage was!

காட்டிலே இயல் நாட்டிலே பயில் வீட்டிலே (kAttilE iyal nAttilE payil veettilE) : In the forests or countryside or even in my own household,

உலகங்கள் ஏச (ulagangaL Esa) : everyone in this world decried me for my meanness.
