Paraphrase

Saint Arunagirinathar asks Lord Murugan to come and witness the fight between him and Yama and his army, a fight in which he, a prattling child, emerges victorious with His grace. Just as He had done once before at Thiruvannamalai, the Lord must appear again in His magnificent regalia: with imposing mountainous shoulders, six faces and twelve eyes, riding on a peacock with a fluttering flagstaff of rooster, flanked by His loyal devotees singing Tamil hymns on one side and the celestials reciting vedas on the other.

கொடிய மறலியும் அவனது கடகமு மடிய (kodiya maRaliyum avanadhu kadagamu madiya) : In order that the evil God of Death and his deadly army perish,

ஒரு தினம் இரு பதம் வழிபடு குதலை அடியவன் (oru dhinam iru padham vazhi padu kudhalai adiyavan) : and I, a little babbling child, worshipping Your two feet,

நினதருள் கொடு பொரும் அமர் காண ( ninadharuL kodu porum amar kANa) : fight the battle I wage with Yaman with Your grace. You must come to see

குறவர் மகள் புணர் புயகிரி சமுகமும் (kuRavar magaLpuNar buyagiri samugamum) : with Your twelve mountain-like shoulders that are embraced by VaLLi, the damsel of the KuRavAs;

அறுமுகமும் வெகு நயனமும் (aRu mugamumvegu nayanamum) : with Your six lovely faces; with several (eighteen) eyes;

ரவியுமிழ் கொடியும் அகிலமும் வெளிபட (raviyumizh kodiyum akilamum veLipada) : and with the Rooster in Your staff that announces the arrival of the sun everyday, ரவி உமிழ்(ravi umizh) : spewed out by the sun; meaning, rooster;

இருதிசை இருநாலும் படியு நெடியன எழு புணரியும் (irudhisai irunAlum padiyum nediyana ezhu puNariyum ) : From west to east and in all eight directions, around the world, around the seven long oceans, புணரி (puNari) : sea;

முது திகிரி திகிரியும் வருக என வருதகு பவுரி வருமொரு மரகத துரகத மிசையேறி (mudhu thigiri thigiriyum varuga ena varuthagu bavuri varum oru maragatha thuragadha misaiyERi) : and around the ancient mountain of ChakravALagiri, Your peacock, which is quite like an emerald horse, can fly in an instant, and on Your command, it comes to You swiftly. You must come mounted on that Peacock, பழமையான வளைந்துள்ள சக்கரவாளகிரியையும் வலம் செய்து வருக என்று ஆணையிட்டதும் உடனேயே பவுரி என்னும் கூத்தாடுகின்ற ஒப்பற்ற பச்சை மயில் வாகனத்தின் மீது ஏறி திகிரி (thigiri) : mountain; பொதுவாக வட்ட வடிவில் உள்ளவற்றை குறிப்பிடும் போது திகிரி என்ற சொல் இலக்கியங்களில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டதாகத் தெரிகிறது. எடுத்துக்காட்டாக திருமாலின் சக்கராயுதம், அரசாணை, தேர், சூரியன், வண்டி, மலை; துரகதம் (thuragatham) : horse; பவுரி (bavuri) : move nimbly;

பழய அடியவருடன் இமையவர் கணம் இருபுடையும் (pazhaya adiyavar udan imaiyavargaNam irupudaiyu) : flanked by Your old devotees and the hordes of DEvAs,

மிகு தமிழ்கொடு மறைகொடு பரவ (migu thamizhkodu maRaikodu parava ) : singing a lot of Tamil hymns, chanting VEdAs, and praising Your Glory.

வரும் அதில் அருணையில் ஒரு விசை வரவேணும் ( varum adhil aruNaiyil oruvisai varavENum) : You should come to me as You once did at ThiruvaNNAmalai!

The following lines describe Murugan's father, Lord Shiva.

சடிலதர விடதர (sadila dhara vidadhara) : He adorns His head with tresses; He holds the venomous poison in His neck; சடிலம் (satilam) : matted hair,

பணிதர தரபரசுதர (paNidhara dhara parasu dhara ) : He wears the serpent as His jewellery; He holds the great mazhu (pickaxe) in His hand; தர பரசு (thara parasu) : pick-axe of high quality, flawless weapon of mazhu; பாம்புகளை ஆபரணமாகத் தரித்தவரும், தரபரசுதர (तर परसु धर) = மேன்மை தங்கிய மழுவைத் தாங்கியவரும்,

சசிதர சுசிதர (sasidhara susidhara) : He wears the crescent moon; He is an embodiment of purity;

இத தமருக மிருக தர (idha thamaruga miruga dhara) : He holds the hand-drum that sounds soothingly; He holds the deer in His holy hand;

வனிதர சிரதர (vani dhara sira dhara) : He holds fire on His hands; He holds one of BrahmA's heads in the hand; வ(ன்)னி(va(n)ni) : fire;

பாரத் தரணிதர (pArath dharaNidhara) : He holds the heavy world in one hand;

தநுதர வெகு முக குல தடினி தர (dhanudhara vegu mugakula thadini dhara) : He holds Mount MEru as one of His bows; and He holds the great River GangA with a thousand branches/tributaries (on His tresses), தடினி(thatini) : river; குல தடினி (kula thatini) : river of ancient lineage, Ganges;

சிவ சுத குண தர பணி சயில (sivasutha guNadhara paNi sayila) : He is Lord SivA, and You are His Son! You are the most virtuous! Your abode is NAgamalai also known as ThiruchchengkOdu! பணி(paNI) : serpent; சயிலம் (sayilam) : mountain;

விதரண தருபுர சசிதரு மயில் வாழ்வே (vitharaNa tharupura sasitharu mayilvAzhvE) : You are the most compassionate One! You are the consort of DEvayAnai, beautiful like a peahen and who is the daughter of IndrANi in Indraloka with plenty of KaRpaga trees. தரு புரம்(tharu puram) : Indraloka where karpaga trees abound; சசி தரு (sasi tharu) : brought up by Sasi/Indrani; விதரணம் (vitharaNam) : philanthropic; கொடை, இரக்க குணம்

The following lines describe the battle field where Muruga slays the asuras.

நெடிய உடலுரு இருளெழ (nediya vudaluru iruLezha) : Darkness from the bodies of the asuras (demons) spread everywhere;

எயிறு நிலவெழ (eyiRu nilavezha ) : their white teeth sparkled like moonlight;

சுழல் விழி தழல் எழ எழுகிரி நெரிய (suzhal vizhi thazhal ezha ezhu giri neriya) : from their fiery eyes, sparks of fire emerged; the seven hills of the asuras were shattered into pieces;

அதிர் குரல் புகை எழ இடி எழ (adhir kural pugai ezha idi ezha) : thunderous noise issued out from the dying asuras, and smoke arose from burning bodies;

நெடுவானும் நிலனும் வெருவர வரு நிசிசரர் தள (neduvAnum nilanum veruvara varu nisicharar dhaLa) : when the armies of the asuras invaded fiercely, scaring the sky and the earth,

நிகில சகலமும் மடிய (nikila sakalamu madiya) : and were thoroughly uprooted and killed,

ஓர் படைதொடு நிருப (Or padaithodu niruba) : when You threw Your unique weapon, the Spear, Oh Lord!

குருபர சுரபதி பரவிய பெருமாளே.(gurupara surapathi paraviya perumALE.) : Oh Supreme Master, You are worshipped by IndrA, Oh Great One!
