வீரர்நே யத்தமையன் என்றதோட் டுணைவோன்

Paraphrase

When Lord Shiva's third eye emitted fiery rays, Parvati ran away, unable to bear the intense heat. Her anklet broke, and each of the nine jewels in her anklet reflected her image on the surface of the lake. From this arose nine Shaktis. As Siva's glance fell upon these shaktis, each was impregnated. Each Shakti produced a fully-grown son, who collectively were to provide the nine generals of Murugan's army. The chief of these was Veerabahu. Thus, Veerabahu was Murugan's brother, and he played a valorous role in vanquishing Soorpadman and his brothers. In this vaguppu, Saint Arnuagirinathar sings about the glory of the sword of Veerabahu.

பூவுளோனுக்கும் உயர் தேவர்கோனுக்கும் எழு பூவில் யாவர்க்கும் வரு துன்பு தீர்த்திடுமே (poo uLOnukkum uyar dhEvar kOnukkum ezhu boovil yaavarkkum varu thunbu theerthidumE) : Veerabahu's sword removes the distress and troubles of Brahma who sits on the lotus flower; Indra, the king of devas; and everyone who lives in the seven worlds; பூவுளோன் (poovuLOn) : Brahma who is seated on the lotus flower; தேவர்கோன் (devarkOne) : King of Devas, Indra;

பூத சேனைக்குள் ஒரு கோடி சூர்யப் பிரபை போல மாயக் கரிய கங்குல் நீக்கிடுமே (bootha sEnaikkuL oru kOti sooryap pirabai pOla maayak kariya kangul neekkidumE) : Shining with the brightness of a million suns amongst the bootha ganas, it removes the blackness of the dark ignorance (maya); கங்குல் (kangul) : darkness;

பூதி பூசிப் பரமர் தோலை மேல் இட்டதொரு போர்வை போல் நெட்டுறை மருங்கு சேர்த்திடுமே (boothi poosip paramar thOlai mEl ittadhoru pOrvai pOl nettuRai marungu sErth thidumE) : It is encased in a scabbard that appears like a blanket of hide that ash-smearing Lord Shiva wears on His body;

போரிலே நிர்த்தம் இடு வீரமா லக்ஷ்மி மகிழ் பூசை நேசித்து மலர் தும்பை சாத்திடுமே (pOrilE nirththam idu veera maa lakshmi magizh poojai nEsiththu malar thumabai saath thidumE) : It is delighted by the puja performed to please Maha Veeralakshmi who dances in the battle field and wears happily the thumbai flower (sign of bravery/heroism/prowess);

பாவருபக் கொடிய சூரனார் பெற்ற பல பாலர் மாளத் தசைகள் உண்டு தேக்கிடுமே (paava roopak kodiya sooranaar petra pala baalar maaLadh dhasaigaL uNdu thEkkidumE) : It feeds on the flesh and sinews of the sons of the cruel asuras who are the embodiment of sins and burps;

பாநுகோபப் பகைஞன் மேனி சோரக் குருதி பாயவே வெட்டி இரு துண்டமாக்கிடுமே (baanukOpap pagainyan mEni sOrak kurudhi paayavE vetti iru thuNdamaak kidumE) : It cuts into two the enemy Banukopan, son of Surapadman, and causes blood to gush out of his body;

பாடுசேர் யுத்தகள மீதிலே சுற்று நரி பாறு பேய் துய்த்திட நிணங்களூட்டிடுமே ( paadusEr yudhdhakaLa meedhilE sutru nari paaRu pEy thuyththida niNangaL oottidumE ) : It feeds the wolf, eagle and devils with the flesh at the destruction-causing battle field; பாறு (paaRu) : eagle;

பாடி ஆடிப் பொருத போரிலே பத்திர கபாலி சூலப்படையை வென்று தாக்கிடுமே ( paadi aadip porudha pOrilE badhdhira kapaali soolap padaiyai vendruthaak kidumE) : It fought with the trident( Soolayudham ) of Bhadra Kali who sang and danced in the battle field;

ஆவலாகத் துதிசெய் பாவலோர் மெய்க்கலிகளாம் அகோரக் களை களைந்து நீக்கிடுமே (aavalaagath thudhi sey paavalOr meyk kalikaLaam agOrak kaLai kaLaindhu neek kidumE) : It removes the true poverty, which is extreme tiredness and dejection, of bards who worship eagerly; களை (kaLai) : tiredness, fatigue, dejection;

யாருமே அற்றவன் என் மீதொர் ஆபத்துற வராமலே சுற்றிலும் இருந்து காத்திடுமே ( yaarumE atravan enmeedhor aabath uRavaraamalE sutrilum irundhu kaaththidumE) : like a fence it surrounds and protects me, who has no other refuge, from any danger;

ஆடல் வேள் நற்படைகள் ஆணை யாவுக்கு முதல் ஆணையா வைத்து வலம் வந்து போற்றிடுமே (aadal vEL naRpadaigaL aaNai yaavukku mudhalaaNaiyaa vaiththu valam vandhu pOtridumE) : It cherishes the weapons of the victorious Murugan as the prime order that is supreme and circumambulates them; ஆடல்(Adal) : victorious; வேள் (vEL) : Murugan; படைகள் (padaigaL) : weapons;

ஆலகாலத்தை நிகர் கால சூலத்தையும் அறாத பாசத்தையும் அரிந்து போட்டிடுமே ( aala kaalaththai nigar kaala soolaththaiyum aRaadha paasaththaiyum arindhu pOttidumE) : It breaks the trident of Yama that is like the alahala poison and the rope of pasam in his hands;

மேவலார் முப்புரமும் நீறவே சுட்ட ஒரு மேருவாம் விற்பரமர் தந்த பாக்கியவான் ( mEvalaar muppuramum neeRavE sutta orunmEruvaam viR paramar thandha baaggiyavaan) : He (Veerabahu) is the gift of Lord Shiva who incinerated the Tripura of the enemies and who wields the Meru mountain as his bow; மேவலார்(mEvalAr) : enemies;

வேடர் மானுக்கும் உயர் தேவயானைக்கும் இசை வேலர் தாளைத்தொழுது உயர்ந்த வாழ்க்கையினான் (vEdar maanukkum uyar dhEvayaanaikkum isai vElar thaaLaith thozhudh uyarndha vaazhk kaiyinaan) : He raised his life to noble heights by worshipping the feet of Vela (Muruga) who is amicable to both the gypsy deer (Valli) and the celestial Deivayanai;

வீறுசேர் மிக்க கண நாதனார் எட்டுவகை வீரர் நேயத் தமையன் என்ற தோள் துணைவோன் (veeRu sEr mikka gaNa naathanaar ettu vagai veerar nEyath thamaiyan endra thOttuNaivOn) : He is the loving brother and helper of the eight warriors who are the reputed nandi ganas; (the nine warriors born from the anklets of Parvati and the grace of Shiva, as mentioned above);

மேன்மையாம் லக்ஷ ரத வீரர் பூசிக்க வரு வீரவாகுத் தலைவன் வென்ற வாட்படையே.(mEnmaiyaam laksha ratha veerar poojikka varu veeravaaguth thalaivan vendra vaat padaiyE) : He is worshipped by the laksha ratha veeras; His weapon of the victorious sword has the distinguished attributes described above.
