சரிப்போன மட்டே விடுத்தா யடுத்தாய்
தகர்த்தா யுடற்றா னிருகூறாச்
சிரத்தோ டுரத்தோ டறுத்தே குவித்தாய்
செகுத்தாய் பலத்தார் விருதாகச்
சிறைச்சேவல் பெற்றாய் வலக்கார முற்றாய்
திருத்தா மரைத்தாளருள்வாயே
புரத்தார் வரத்தார் சரச்சே கரத்தார்
பொரத்தா னெதிர்த்தேவருபோது
பொறுத்தார் பரித்தார் சிரித்தா ரெரித்தார்
பொரித்தார் நுதற்பார்வையிலேபின்
கரித்தோ லுரித்தார் விரித்தார் தரித்தார்
கருத்தார் மருத்தூர்மதனாரைக்
கரிக்கோல மிட்டார் கணுக்கான முத்தே
கதிர்க்காம முற்றார்முருகோனே.

Paraphrase

சரத்தே உதித்தாய் (saraththE udhiththAy) : You were born amidst the reeds; சரம்(saram) : darbai grass; Murugan appeared in a forest near the Ganges that was thick with darba grass/reeds; that is why He is called 'Saravanabhava'

உரத்தே குதித்தே சமர்த்தாய் எதிர்த்தே வரு சூரை (uraththE kudhiththE samarththAy edhirththE varusUrai) When SUran jumped into the battlefield strongly and smartly, உரத்தே (uraththe) : strongly;

சரி போன மட்டே விடுத்தாய் ( sarippOna matte viduththAy) : You spared him until he behaved himself; ஒழுங்காக நடந்த வரையில் சும்மா விட்டிருந்தாய்;

அடுத்தாய் (aduththAy ) : (when he did not) You approached him and closed in on him; (சரியில்லாத போது) அடுத்து வந்து அவனை நெருக்கினாய், அடுத்தாய் = நெருங்கினாய்;

தகர்த்தாய் உடல் தான் இரு கூறா (thagarththAy udal thAn irukURA) : then You split his body into two;

சிரத்தோடு உரத்தோடு அறுத்தே குவித்தாய் (siraththOdu uraththOdu aRuththE kuviththAy) : his head and chest were cut and piled into a heap; சிரம் (siram) : head; உரம் (uram) : chest;

செகுத்தாய் (seguththAy) : finally, You killed him.

பல தார் விருதாக சிறை சேவல் பெற்றாய் வலக்காரம் உற்றாய் (palaththAr virudhAga siRai sEval petrAy valakkAram utrAy) : Many garlands of appreciation were showered on You, along with a staff carrying a rooster. You obtained victory! சிறை சேவல் (sirai seval) : rooster with feather/wings; சிறை சேவல் பெற்றாய் ( siRai sEval petrAy) : சிறகை உடைய சேவல் ஒன்றைப் பெற்றாய் ; வலக்காரம் (valakkaram) : victory; விருது (viruthu ) : award;

திரு தாமரை தாள் அருள்வாயே (thiru thAmarai thAL aruLvAyE) : Kindly grant me Your lotus feet!

புரத்தார் வரத்தார் சரம் சேகரத்தார் (puraththAr varaththAr sarachchE garaththAr) : The asuras at Thiripuram were well stocked with boons and arrows; புரத்தார் (puraththar) : residents of thiripuram, that is, the asuras; புரத்தார் வரத்தார் (puraththAr varaththAr) : திரிபுரத்தில் இருந்த வரம் பெற்ற மூன்று அசுரர்களும் சரம் (saram) : arrows;

பொரத்தான் எதிர்த்தே வரு போது (poraththAn edhirththE varupOdhu) : when they came forward to wage a war (with SivA),

பொறுத்தார் பரித்தார் (poRuththAr pariththAr) : SivA was patient at first and later, attired Himself in a war-outfit; பரித்தார் (pariththAr) : போர்க் கோலத்தைத் தாங்கினார்;

சிரித்தார் எரித்தார் (siriththAr eriththAr:) : (without any weapons) he smiled and burnt Thiripuram down

பொரித்தார் நுதல் பார்வையிலே (poriththAr nudhaRpAr vaiyilE) : with the sparkling fiery eye on His forehead! நுதல் (nuthal ) : forehead;

பின் கரி தோல் உரித்தார் (pin kariththOl uriththAr) : Then, He peeled off the hide of (GajaAsuran who came as) an elephant; கரி ( kari) : elephant;

விரித்தார் தரித்தார் (viriththAr dhariththAr) : He spread out the hide and wore it as His robe!

கருத்தார் மருத்து ஊர் மதனாரை (karuththAr maruththUr madhanArai) : When Manmathan sent by DEvAs, came on the chariot of southerly breeze ( with the intention to shoot arrows at Him), (தேவர்கள் கேட்டுக்கொண்டபடி தம்மீது அம்பு எய்யும்) கருத்தோடு தென்றலைத் தேராகக்கொண்டு ஊர்ந்துவந்த மன்மதனை மருத்து (maruththu ) : wind/breeze which is the chariot of Manmatha;

கரி கோலம் இட்டார் (karikkola mittAr) : He reduced Manmatha into ashes; and that Great SivA

க(ண்)ணுக்கு ஆன முத்தே (kaNukkAna muththE) : adores You as the pearl of His eye! கண்மணியான முத்தையனே,

கதிர் கோலம் உற்றார் முருகோனே (kadhirkAmam utrAr murugOnE.) : You are happily settled in KadhirgAmam, Oh MurugA!
