Paraphrase

This is an extraordinary type of Prabandam, involving the drawing of a chariot-like figure with a top half and a bottom one. Each half is in the form of a seven-tiered pyramid, with the top one an upright pyramid and the bottom one, inverted. Saint Arunagirinathar has chosen the words representing numbers and has woven all these into an enthralling garland of words, that is at once lilting in metre, profound, brimming over with Bhakti and matchlessly magnificent in composition. This Tiruvezhukoottrirukkai belongs to a poetical form known as "Chitra Kavi".

The Prabandam begins with words incorporating the number one for the first tier, and go to the next tier of the upright pyramid, with numbers from 1 and 2 and back to 1 and then on to the next tier, as in this series: 1,121, 12321, 1234321, 123454321, 12345654321, and finally 1234567654321. Then there is a level ground for a person to sit. Now the numbers go down in the order reverse to the ascending progression, forming the bottom parts the chariot, finally ending in 1.

1st tier: 1

ஓர் உருவாகிய தாரக பிரமத்து (OruruvAgiya thAragap piramaththu) : The Brahmam is the single, most complete, primeval and universal principle, matter or form;

Pranava means "Cosmic Sound"- Aum. The whole universe is created from “Aum.” Sarvam Omkara eva. Aum is a cosmic vibration. Aum is not a sound or even a mere vibration, but it is just existence, pure and simple, known as Satchidananda-Svarupa – Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. In the temporal form, Aum may be said to designate all that is existent in creation; in its eternal form it cannot be said to constitute any kind of particular form; it is formless, durationless and spaceless.

2nd tier: 121

ஒரு வகைத் தோற்றத்து இரு மரபு எய்தி ஒன்றாய் (oruvagaith thOtRaththu iru marabeythi onRAy onRi ) : in whose unique form (Lord SivA's five faces joined with the sixth, athOmugam), characteristics of Shiva and Shakti combine to express itself as a single unit; தாதான்மியமும் அத்துவிதமும் சிவம், சத்திகளிடையே உள்ள சம்பந்தம் தாதான்மியம். இதனை ஒருமையில் இருமை என்பர். சிவம் உயிர்களோடு ஒன்றாய், வேறாய், உடனாய் இயைந்து நிற்றலாகிய சம்பந்தம் அத்துவிதம். அதனை இருமையில் ஒருமை எனபர். தாதான்மியம் என்பது, பொருள் ஒன்றேயாயினும் செயற்பாட்டில் இரு திறப்பட்டு நிற்றல்; அத்துவிதம் என்பது, பொருள் இரண்டாயினும் அவை பிரிந்து நில்லாமல் ஒரு தன்மைப்பட்டு நிற்றல்.

3rd tier: 12321

ஒன்றி இருவரில் தோன்றி மூவாது ஆயினை இரு பிறப்பாளரின் ஒருவன் ஆயினை (iruvAriR thOnRi mUvAthAyinai irupiRappALarin oruvan Ayinai) : having the origin from the two aspects, namely, Shakthi and Sivam; You remain youthful for ever! You came as the unique poet (ThirugnAna Sambandhar) in the lineage of Brahmins! (who are supposed to have two (2) births, one before the holy-thread ceremony and one after; இரு பிறப்பாளர் (iru pirappaLar ) : twice born (born once before the investiture through thread ceremony and a new life after); இரு பிறப்பாளர் : உபநயனத்திற்கு முன்பு பெற்ற தாய்க்கு மகனாக விளங்கிய பிறப்பும், உபநயனத்திற்குப் பிறகு குருநாதரையும், குருபத்தினியையும், தந்தையும் தாயுமாகக் கொண்ட பிறப்பும்- ஆக இரண்டு பிறப்புகளைக் கொண்டவர்கள்.

4th tier: 1234321

ஓராச் செய்கையின் இருமையின் முன் நாள் (OrAc cheygaiyin irumaiyin munnAL) : One day, angered by Lord Brahma's ignorance and His haughty behavior (of walking past Lord Muruga without paying obeisance to Him), ஓராச் செய்கை (OrA cheygai ) : ignorant action (of Brahma in not knowing the meaning of Pranava mantra); பிரணவ பொருளை ஆராயாத காரணத்தினால்; இருமை (irumai ) : pride;

நான் முகன் குடுமி இமைப்பினில் பெயர்த்து ( nAnmugan kudumi imaippiniR peyarththu) : You pulled the tuft of the four-faced Brahma in the blink of an eye;

மூவரும் போந்து இரு தாள் வேண்ட( mUvarum pOnthu iruthAL vENda) : When VishNu, SivA and IndrA, the three Lords, approached You and prostrated at Your two feet requesting compassion,

ஒரு சிறை விடுத்தனை(orusiRai viduththanai) : You released Brahma from his prison-cell.

5th tier: 123454321

ஒரு நொடி அதனில் இரு சிறை மயிலின் ( orunodi athanil irusiRai mayilin ) : In one instant, You mounted the peacock with two wings;

முந்நீர் உடுத்த நானிலம் அஞ்ச நீ வலம் செய்தனை ( munneeer uduththa nAnilam anja nee valam seythanai) : You flew around the world. and the impact was such that the earth draping the seas (surrounded by water in three sides) as a robe, and consisting of four major subdivisions of land, namely, mullai - the forests, kuRinji - the mountains, marutham - plains with paddy-fields, and neythal - the seaside, was shaken.

நால் வகை மருப்பின் மும்மதத்து இரு செவி ஒரு கைப் பொருப்பன் மகளை வேட்டனை (nAlvagai maruppin mummathaththu irusevi orugai poruppan magaLai vEttanai) : You married the daughter of Indra who possesses Airavata elephant which has four types of tusks, is capable of being affected by three kinds of frenzy, has two ears and a unique trunk; ஒரு கை( oru kai : trunk which is considered an arm;

6th tier: 12345654321

ஒருவகை வடிவினில் இரு வகைத்து ஆகிய மும்மதன் தனக்கு மூத்தோன் ஆகி (oruvagai vadivinil iruvagaith thAgiya mummadhan thanakku mUththOn Agi) : In a unique form, Ganesha came as an older elephant (only older elephants have masth water, younger elephants don't have this) with three different discharges of frenzy (through its cheeks, its trunk and its jaw)(called மதநீர் in Tamil) to help Muruga who became the elder brother of the older elephant Ganesha (who followed/came after Muruga); இரு வகைத்து ஆகிய = முது களிறு, இளங்களிறு என இரண்டு வகையாகவும் வந்து காட்சி தந்த; மும்மதன் தனக்கு மூத்தோன் ஆகி மும்மதத்துடன் வந்த யானைக்கு மூத்தவனாகி விளங்கி,
To help Murugan, Ganapati came as an old elephant to frighten VaLLi. As that old elephant manifested, in terms of time, after Murugan, the latter becomes elder to Ganapati. முருகனுக்காக வள்ளியை பயமுறுத்த விநாயகர் கிழ யானையாகி மதம் பெருக வந்தார். அப்படி வந்த யானை முருகனுக்குப் பின்பு தோன்றியதால், முருகன் இங்கு மூத்தவன் ஆகிறான்.

நால் வாய் முகத்தோன் ஐந்து கைக் கடவுள் அறுகு சூடிக்கு இளையோன் ஆயினை ( nAlvAy mugaththOn aindhugaik kadavuL aRugu sUdik kiLaiyOn Ayinai ) : You are the younger brother of Lord Ganapati who has a trunk hanging from His mouth, five arms (four arms and one trunk) and who wears arugam pul; நால் வாய்( nAlvAy) : hanging mouth or trunk; aRugu sUdi one who wears the grass aRugam pul,

ஐந்து எழுத்து அதனில் நான் மறை உணர்த்தும் முக்கண் சுடரினை இரு வினை மருந்துக்கு ஒரு குரு ஆயினை (aindhezhuththu adhanil nAnmaRai uNarththu mukkat chudarinai iruvinai marundhuk koru guru vAyinai) : the four vEdAs declare Him to be the Lord Almighty through the five sacred letters of Lord SivA (namely, NamasivAya); He has three effulgent eyes (namely, the Sun, the Moon and the Fire - agni); He is the ultimate medicine for the two kinds of actions (namely, good and bad); He is Lord SivA; and You are the unique Master of that Lord SivA!

ஒரு நாள் உமை தரு இரு முலைப் பால் அருந்தி முத்தமிழ் விரகன் நால் கவி ராஜன் ஐம்புலக் கிழவன் அறு முகன் இவன் என எழு தரும் அழகுடன் கழுமலத்து உதித்தனை (orunAL umaiyiru mulaippAl arundhi muththamizh viragan nARkavi rAjan aimbulak kizhavan aRumugan ivanena ezhiltharum azhagudan kazhumalath thudhiththanai) : At SeegAzhi, You were born as Thirugnanasambandhar, who once imbibed the holy milk from the two hallowed breasts of Goddess UmA DEvi, became an expert in all the three branches of Tamil language (namely, literature, music and drama), became the king of four kinds of poetry, and conquered the five sensory organs, without being subject to any of their influence; people referred to him as none other than Lord ShanmugA, with six faces; he had an extraordinary youth and handsomness; விரகன் (viragan) : proficient; கிழவன் (kizhavan) : one with ownership; கழுமலம் ( kazhumalam ) : Seerkazhi;

அறு மீன் பயந்தனை ஐந் தரு வேந்தன் நான் மறைத் தோற்றத்து முத்தலை செம் சூட்டு அன்றில் அம் கிரி இரு பிளவாக ஒரு வேல் விடுத்தனை (aRumeen payandhanai aindharu vEndhan nAnmaRaith thOtraththu muththalaic chenjchUttu andRil angiri iru piLavAga oruvEl viduththanai) : You came as the child of the six (6) KArthigai maids (represented by the six star-constellation, KArthigai); You became the emperor of the Celestial world that possesses five (5) wish-yielding trees (namely, kaRpagam, manthAram, pArijAtham, santhAnam and arichanthanam); You wielded Your unique spear and split into two the Krauncha mountain that has the name of the bird anRil, has three distinctive reddish peaks as its crest and has an appearance resembling the four vEdAs; அறுமீன் (aRumeen) : The six stars: the Kartigai maidens; ஐம் தரு (aimtharu) : The five (celestial) trees; அன்றிலங் கிரி (andrilam giri) : Krauncha mountain known after the andril bird; செஞ்சூட்டு (senjoottu) : reddish peaks;

காவிரி வட கரை மேவிய குரு கிரி இருந்த ஆறு எழுத்து அந்தணர் அடி இணை போற்ற ஏரகத்து இறைவன் என இருந்தனையே.(kAviri vadakarai mEviya gurugiri irundha ARezhuththu andhaNar adiyiNai pOtra Eragathth iRaivan ena irundhanaiyE.) : You are seated with relish as the Lord of ThiruvEragam on Swamimalai on the northern bank of River KAvEri, where Your lotus feet are extolled by VEdic priests chanting the six-lettered manthrA, SaravaNabava.
