Paraphrase

தரணியில் அரணிய முரண் இரணியன் உடல் தனை ( dharaNiyil araNiya muraN iraNiyan udalthanai) : The body of the hostile Hiranyasura who built forts on the earth, அரண் (araN) : forts; முரண் (muraN) : conflicting, enemy, hostile;

நக நுதி கொடு சாடு ஓங்கு நெடுங் கிரி (naga nudhikodu saadOngu nedun giri ) : was torn by the tips of sharp nails by assuming a huge mountain-like Narasimha form; here the Shakti is synonymous with Hari. சாடு = எதிர்த்து அழித்து, ஓங்கு நெடும் கிரி = பெரிய மலை போல் உயர்ந்த நரசிங்க அவதாரத்தை எடுத்தவள்;

ஓடு ஏந்து பயங்கரி (Odu Endhu bayankari) : She is the skull-holding, terrifying goddess; பயங்கரி (bhayankari) : can mean bhayam + hari or one who severs the fears (of the devotees), or it can mean one who is terrifying to the adversaries/enemies; பிரமனுடைய கபாலமாகிய மண்டையோட்டைக் கையில் ஏந்தியிருப்பவள். அவள் அடியார்களின் அச்சத்தை நீக்குபவள், பகைவர்களுக்கு அச்சத்தை தருபவள்.

தமருகம் பரிபுரம் ஒலி கொடு நட நவில் சரணிய (dhamaruga paripura olikodu nadanavil charaNiya) : Her holy feet do the dance of destruction to the accompaniment of damru or the hand-drum and the anklets; உடுக்கை சிலம்பு இவைகள் ஒலிக்க, சங்கார நிர்த்தனம் புரியும் திருவடிகளை உடையவள், நட நவில் = (சம்ஹார) நடனம் செய்கின்ற;

சதுர் மறை தாது அம்புய (chathur maRai thaathaambuya ) : worshipped by four vedas and has feet that are like pollen-filled lotus; நான்கு வேதங்களிற் போற்றப்படுபவள். மகரந்தப் பொடியோடு கூடிய தாமரையைப் போன்ற பாதத்தை உடையவள்; அம்புயம் (ambuyam) : water-born, lotus;

மந்திர வேதாந்த பரம்பரை (manthira vEdhaantha paramparai) : She is the manifestation of various mantras – for example, Panchakshara or Vidya mantra; She is the end (or the essence) of the Vedas; She is higher than the highest; மந்திர ஸ்வரூபமானவள், (பஞ்சாட்சர சடாக்ஷர முதலிய ஸ்ரீ வித்யா ரூபமாக திகழ்பவள்); வேதங்களின் முடிவாக விளங்குபவள்; மேலான யாவருக்கும் மேலானவள்;

சத தள முகுளித தாம அம் குச (satha thaLa mukuLitha thaam aankucha) : Her beautiful breasts are adorned by garlands of hundred-petalled newly blooming lotus flowers; நூறு இதழ்களைக் கொண்ட தாமரை அரும்பு விட்டது போல் காட்சி கொடுக்கும் மாலைகளை பூண்டிருக்கும் மார்பை உடையவள்

மென் திரு தாள் அந்தர அம்பிகை (men thiru thaaLaanthara ambikai) : She is Ambikai with soft and holy feet, and who resides in the 'chith akash', the space of consciousness experienced in a state of deep meditation; அந்தரம் = ஆகாசம்; அந்தர அம்பிகை = சிதாகாசத்தில் உறையும் அம்பிகை.

தருபதி சுரரோடு சருவிய அசுரர்கள் தடமணி முடிபொடி தான் ஆம்படி செங்கையில் வாள் வாங்கிய சங்கரி (tharu pathi surarodu saruviya asurargaL thada maNimudi podi thaan aampadi sengkaiyil vaaL vaangiya sankari) : She is the Shankari who is holding in Her hands a sword that grinds into dust the gem-studded crowns of hostile asuras who fought with Indra and other devas living in the celestial town of Amaravati; தருபதி (tharu pathi) : master of the karpagam tree, Indra; தரு (tharu) : tree; here, Karpaga tree; சருவிய அசுரர்கள் = மாறுபட்டு போரிட்ட அரக்கர்கள்; தட மணி முடி பொடி தானாம் படி = அகன்ற ரத்னங்கள் பதித்த கிரீடங்கள் பொடியாகும்படி;
அம்பாள் தேவர்களுடன் பகை பூண்டிருந்த சும்பன், நிசும்பன், பண்டாசுரன், ரக்த பீஜன், மஹிஷன் என்றெல்லாம் பல அசுரர்களைப் வாள் முதலான பல ஆயுதங்கள் கொண்டு அழித்தாள்.

இரண கிரண மடமயில் (iraNa kiraNa mada mayil) : Appearing radiant and golden, and like a delicate peacock, இரணம்/ இரணியம் (iraNam / iraNiyam ) : gold; கிரண (kiraNa) : radiant; She struts majestically like a peacock when the sun sets or when the sun disappears temporarily during the rain; பொன் நிறத்தவள், ஒளி வீசுபவள், மடப்பமுடைய (delicate) மயிலை ஒத்தவள்; அம்பிகை மயில் வடிவம் கொண்டு மயிலாப்பூரிலும், மாயூரத்திலும் சிவபெருமானை வழிபட்டாள். இரண … ஹிரண்ய வர்ணம் கொண்டவரள். பொன்னிறமானவள். (சிவந்த நிறமுள்ளவள் என்பது பொருள். மாதுளம் போது, மலர்க்கமலை என்று அபிராமி அந்தாதியும், ரக்தவர்ணா என்று லலிதா ஸஹஸ்ரநாமமும் வருணிக்கின்றன) சிவந்த நிறம்; பொன்னிறம் இரண்டும் ஒருபொருள் சுட்டுவன. ‘நீறுபடு மாழைபொரு மேனியவ வேல’ என்று அருணகிரி பாடுகிறார். நீறுபடு மாழை என்றால் உருக்கிய தங்கம் என்று பொருள். உருக்கிய தங்கத்தைப்போன்ற நிறத்தவன் முருகன்; அதே நிறத்தவள் அம்பிகை.

ம்ருகமதம் புளகித இளமுலை இள நீர் தாங்கி நுடங்கிய நூல் போன்ற மருங்கினள் (mrugamadha puLagitha iLamulai iLa neer thaangi nudangiya noolpOndra marunginaL) : She has thin, thread-like waist that is bent under the weight of Her young ecstatic breasts looking like the unripe coconut, and scented with kasturi,

இறுகிய சிறுபிறை எயிறு உடை எம படர் எனது உயிர் கொள வரின் (iRugiya siRu piRai eyiRu udai yamapadar enadhuyir koLa varin) : When Yama, whose teeth look like the tightly bent crescent moon, comes to whisk away my life, எயிறு (eyiRu) : teeth;

யான் ஏங்குதல் கண்டு எதிர் தான் ஏன்று கொளும் குயில் (yaan Engudhal kaNdedhir thaan Endru koLum kuyil) : witnessing my despair, she would appear before me and trill sweetly like a cuckoo, giving me refuge; தானேன்று கொளும் குயில் = ‘தான் என்று’ நானிருக்கிறேன் (அஞ்சாதே) என்று கொள்பவளான குயில். எம படர் (यमभट) = யமனுடைய சேவகர்கள்/படையினர்; (भट) is a Sanskrit word meaning "soldiers".

இடு பலி கொடு திரி இரவலர் இடர் கெட விடும் மன கர தல ஏகாம்பரை ( idubali kodu thiri iravalar idar kedavidu mana karathala Ekaambarai) : She has the will and the hands to shower grace and remove the grief of those who wander begging in the world, She is the Ekambarai who removes their anguish with the Grace of Her Abhaya Hasta; Ekambarai is the consort of Ekambaranathar at Kanchipuram. Ekambarai means peerless supreme; பிச்சை வாங்குவதற்காக உலகத்தில் உழலும் நலிந்தவர்கள் துன்பங்கள் அகலும்படி, அவர்களுக்கு வேண்டியவற்றை கொடுக்கும் மனமும் கைத்தலமும் கொண்டு காஞ்சி ஏகாம்பரநாதரின் மனைவியான காமாட்சி, இரவலர் = யாசகர்கள்; பலி = கொடை, காணிக்கை;
பூவுலகில் இருந்து இரு நாழி நெல் கொண்டு முப்பத்திரண்டு அறங்களையும் வழுவாது இயற்றி தம்மை அறியுமாறு அம்பிகைக்கு அருளினார் - ஐயன். அதன்படி ஐயன் அளந்த இருநாழி நெல்லுடன் பூவுலகில் - காஞ்சியில் உள்ள கம்பை ஆற்றின் கரையில் மணலால் சிவலிங்கம் அமைத்து முப்பத்திரண்டு அறங்களையும் வழுவாது வளர்த்தனள் அம்பிகை. அம்பிகை அறம் வளர்த்தது காஞ்சியில் என்றாலும் அங்கே அவளுக்கு ஸ்ரீகாமாட்சி என்பதே திருப்பெயர். ஆனால், அறம் வளர்த்த நாயகி எனும் திருப்பெயர் கொண்டு திகழ்வது - திருவையாற்றில் தான்.

இந்திரை மோகாங்க சுமங்கலை ( indhirai mogaanga sumangalai) : She is Lakshmi who bestows salvation; She has a bewitching body and She is the eternally auspicious spouse (sumangali);

எழுதிய படமென இருள் அறு சுடர் அடி இணை தொழும் மவுனிகள் ஏகாந்த சுகந்தரு பாசம் அங்குச சுந்தரி (ezhudhiya padamena iruL aRu sudaradi iNai thozhu mavunigaL Ekaantha sugam tharu paasaangkusa sundhari) : She holds in Her hands the 'pasam' and 'ankusam' that bestow the transcendental state of happiness and tranquility of solitude to those Jnanis who remain motionless like a hand-drawn painting and meditate in total silence on the twin feet of Devi, which remove the darkness of ignorance, and dazzle with the light of knowledge; The pasam (noose) and ankusam (goad) hold in check organs of action and the wandering senses, and destroy the ego. எழுதிவைத்துள்ள படமோ என்று வியந்து சொல்லத்தக்க மெளன நிலையில் இருந்து, அஞ்ஞான இருளை அறுத்து ஒழித்து ஞான ஒளி வீசும் தேவியின் திருவடி இரண்டையும் தொழுகின்ற ஞானிகளுக்கு முடிவான ஒன்று எனப்படும் முத்தி நிலை ஆனந்தத்தை (அல்லது, ஏகாந்த தனிப்பட்ட அல்லது நிச்சயமான சுகத்தைத்) தருகின்றவளும், பாசம், அங்குசம் இரண்டையும் திருக்கரத்திற் கொண்டுள்ளவளுமான அழகி.

கந்தரி நீலாஞ்சனி (kandhari neelaanjani ) : She ties/binds the karmas of Her bhaktas (She lives in the cave-like hearts of her devotees; She holds the skull of Brahmadeva -- which means Her functions are far beyond those of the creater God Brahma;) Her complexion is blue, as though a blue eye toner/ink (anjanam, kajal) has been applied; கந்தரம் = குகை அல்லது கழுத்து / தலை;
கந்தரி என்றால் "பிரம்ம கபாலத்தை ஏந்தியவள்" அல்லது "அடியாருடைய இதயக் குகையில் இருப்பவள்". ஆரணத்தோன் கந்தரி கைத்தலத்தாள் - "வேதநூலை கையில் தாங்கும் பிரம்மதேவனின் திருமுகத்தை தரித்த கைத்தலத்தை உடையவளே". ஆரணம் என்றால் வேதம் என்று பொருள். ஆரணத்தோன் என்று பிரம்மனுக்கு ஒரு பெயர் உண்டு.

நஞ்சு உமிழ் கனல் எரி கண பண குணமணி அணி பணி கன வளை ( nanju umizh kanal eri gaNa paNa guNamaNi aNi paNi gana vaLai) : She wears as bangles a bunch of 'kala sarpam' serpents that emit poison and have hoods that are decked with precious stones and flash sparks of fire and; பணி (paNi) : serpent; கண பண குணமணி அணி பணி கன வளை = கூட்டத்துடன் விளங்கும் பணா மகுடங்களை கொண்டதும், சிறந்த ஜாதி ரத்னங்களை முடியில் தாங்கும் சர்ப்பத்தை பெருமை மிக்க கையில் வளையளாக தரித்திருப்பவள்; கனலெரி = நெருப்பு ஜ்வாலையை கக்குவதுமானதும், கண பண = கூட்டத்துடன் விளங்கும் பணா மகுடங்களை கொண்டதும், குணமணி = சிறந்த ஜாதி ரத்னங்களை, அணி = முடியில் தாங்கும், கன வளை = பெருமை மிக்க கையில் வளையளாக தரித்திருப்பவள்,

மரகத காசாம்பர கஞ்சுளி தூசு ஆம் படி கொண்டவள் ( maragatha kaasaambara kanjuLi dhoosaam padi koNdavaL) : She wears a blue upper garment on her emerald green body; காசா/காயா (kaasa/kaaya) : the name of a shrub with blue flowers, for example; காயாம்பு வண்ணன் (kaayaambuvannan) : refers to the blue-coloured or Vishnu, கஞ்சுளி (kanjuLi) : blouse; தூசாம்படி கொண்டவள் = வஸ்திரமாக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டவள், தூசு = cloth, garment,

கனை கழல் நினையலர் உயிர் அவி பயிரவி (kanaikazhal ninaiyalar uyiravi bayiravi) : She is the Bhairavi who takes away the lives of those who do not ponder over Her tinkling feet;

கவுரி கமலை குழை காதார்ந்த செழும் கழுநீர் தோய்ந்த பெரும் திரு (gavuri kamalai kuzhai kaadhaarndha sezhung kazhuneer thOyndha perum thiru ) : She is the golden colored Ambikai whi sits on the lotus; She wears the NeeloRpala flowers on her ears; குழை (kuzhai) : ear; செழுங் கழுநீர் (sezhum kazhu neer) : neelotpala flower; கவுரி (gavuri) : Golden complexion; செழும் (sezhum) : pulsating with vigor and energy, vibrant; energetic; vital; திரு (thiru) : Lakshmi;

கரை பொழி திருமுக கருணையில் உலகு எழு கடல் நிலை பெற வளர் காவு ஏந்திய பைங்கிளி (karai pozhi thirumuga karuNaiyil ulagezhu kadal nilai peRa vaLar kaavEndhiya painkiLi) : she is the parrot who administers, protects and guards this world and the seven seas with the rain of compassion that Her kind face showers over them; காவு ஏந்திய (kAvu Enthiya) : காத்தல் தொழிலை மேற்கொண்டுள்ள

மா சாம்பவி தந்தவன் (maa saambavi thandhavan) : You (Murugan) are the gift from Maha Sambhavi, who is the consort of Sambhunatha or Lord Shiva;

அரண் நெடு வட வரை அடியொடு பொடி பட (araNedu vadavarai adiyodu podipada ) : In order that the tall and fort-like Meru mountain gets pulverized, அரண் (araN) : fort; வரை (varai) : mountain;

அலை கடல் கெட அயில் வேல் வாங்கிய செந்தமிழ் நூலோன் ( alaikadal keda ayil vEl vaangiya senthamizh noolOn) : He is the wielder of the spear (vel) that dried out the undulating wavy sea; He is the master of classical Tamil literature;

குமரன் குகன் அறுமுகன் (kumaran guhan aRumugan) : He has other sobriquets such as Kumaran, Gugan and Arumugan;

ஒருபதோடு இரு புயன் அபினவன் (orupadhodu irubuyan abinavan) : He has twelve arms; He is eternally new;

அழகிய குறமகள் தார் வேய்ந்த புயன் (azhagiya kuRamagaL thaarvEyndha buyan ) : On His shoulders recline the beautiful Valli adorned with garlands;

பகை ஆம் மாந்தர்கள் அந்தகன் (pagaiyaa maandhargaL anthagan) : He is like Yama for the enemies;

அடல் மிகு கட தட விக(ख)டித மத களிறு (adanmigu kadathada vikatitha madhakaLiR ) : The strangely beautiful Ganesha, the strong elephant on whose cheeks flow tears of intoxication; அடல் மிகு (adal migu) : very strong; மத களிறு (madha kaLiRu) : intoxicated elephant, here, metaphor for Ganesha ; கடம் (kadam) : Troop of elephants, water of intoxication flowing from the eyes of 'masth' elephant; தடம் (thadam) : track; கட தட (kada thada) : can also be translated as track left behind by the 'masth' tears flowing on its cheeks; விகடித (vikhatita) : strangely beautiful;

'நான்' என்னும் 'ஆணவம்', என்னால் நடக்கிறது எனும் மாயையால் வரும் மதர்ப்பு, அதனால் விளையும் கன்மம் என ஜீவன் அல்லல் படும் மூன்று வித மயக்கங்களை மும்மலங்கள், மும்மதங்கள் எனச் சொல்லுவர் பெரியோர். மதம் பிடித்த யானைக்கு மூன்று இடங்களிலிருந்து (மண்டையோடு, கண்களுக்கும் காதுகளுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள இடம் மற்றும் ஆண்குறி) மத நீர் ஒழுகும். இந்த மூவகைப்பட்ட மதநீர் ஆணவம், மாயை, கன்மம் என்னும் மூன்று மலங்களை குறிக்கின்றன. மதநீர் ஒழுகும் தடம் அல்லது சுவடு நமது ஆன்மவினைகளைக் கழுவிடும் நீரை சுட்டுகிறது. யோக சாத்திர மரபுப்படி சூரிய நாடியும் சந்திர நாடியும் மையத்திலிருக்கும் சூழுமுனை நாடியுடன் இணைந்ததனால் பெருகும் அமுததாரை விளங்கும் மும்மதநீர் தடம் உடைய ஞான சொரூபமான விநாயகர் வினைகளை தீர்க்கவல்லவர்.

அனவரதமும் அகலா மாந்தர்கள் சிந்தையில் வாழ்வாம் படி ( anavarathamum agalaa maanthargaL chinthaiyil vaazhvaam padi ) : He (murugan) stays in the minds/hearts of those who always remember and contemplate (on Ganesha);
