Paraphrase

அந்தகன் வரும் தினம் பிறகு இட (andagan varum dinam piragu ida ) : To put off the visit of Yama, the god of death,

சந்ததமும் வந்து கண்டு அரிவையர்க்கு அன்பு உருகும் சங்கதம் தவிர (santhathamum vandhu kaNdu arivaiyarku anbu urugu sangatham thavira) : To avoid the constant sojourns at (call) girls and pining for their company,

முக்குணம் மாள (mukguNam mALa) : To destroy the three gunas – there are three major guṇas that serve as the fundamental operating principles or 'tendencies' of prakṛti (universal nature) which are called: sattva guṇa, rajas guṇa, and tamas guṇa. They are associated with creation (sattva), preservation (rajas), and destruction (tamas). The entire creation and its process of evolution is carried out by these three major gunas. He who endeavors to go beyond the gunas to transcend their characteristics, creates ultimate freedom for himself by going beyond the forces of nature, and resides in non-dualistic divinity.

To obtain the state as described above and get His darshan, one must

அந்திபகல் என்ற இரண்டையும் ஒழித்து (andhi pagal endru iraNdaiyum ozhithu) : squash the day and night — attaining awakened levels of consciousness by transcending day and night;

Various levels of consciousness and self awareness are associated with sleep and waking states and transitional states between these two states. Scientists can monitor and measure the brain activities with EEG. We have five brain wave frequencies (Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta and Gamma) measured in cycles per second (Hz), with characteristic level of brain activity and a unique state of consciousness. Mental discipline and meditation can change how the brain works and allow people to achieve different levels of awareness.

இந்திரிய சஞ்சலங்களை அறுத்து (indhiriya sanchalangaLai aRuthu) : excise the disturbances caused by the indriyas.

Our mind is fed by Indriyas and cannot exist without them. The Indriyas (senses) put us in contact with the external world and sets the desires in motion. If you can control the desires through the mind, you can control the Indriyas.

அம்புய பதங்களின் பெருமையை கவி பாடி (ambuya padhangaLin perumaiyai kavipAdi) : sing litanies in praise of your lotus feet,

செந்திலை உணர்ந்து உணர்ந்து உணர்வு உற (chendhilai uNarndhu uNarndhu uNarvuRa) : contemplate and concentrate over Tiruchendur until it is absorbed in my being

கந்தனை அறிந்து அறிந்து அறிவினில் சென்று செருகும் தடம் தெளிதர (kandhanai aRindhu aRindhu aRivinil chendru cherugum thadam theLithara) : immerse in thoughts of Kanda so that I comprehend its origin in my consciousness

தணியாத சிந்தையும் அவிழ்ந்து அவிழ்ந்து உரை ஒழித்து (thaNiyAdha chindhaiyum avizhndhu avizhindhu urai ozhithu) : disengage the unending and relentless thoughts (from the objects of their attention) and quash the speech

என் செயல் அழிந்து அழிந்து அழிய (en seyal azhindhu azhindhu azhiya) : destroy my actions: that is, I destroy the thought that I am the doer of the action; சிந்தை அவிழ்தல் = மனம் நெகிழ்ந்து விரிவடைதல்;

மெய் சிந்தை வர என்று நின் தெரிசனை படுவேனோ (mey chinthai vara endru nin dherisanai paduvEnO) : and attain real wisdom (to get all this) will I ever get your glimpse?

கொந்து அவிழ் சரண் சரண் சரண் என (kondhu avizh charaN saraN saraNena) : Realizing that your flower-lavished feet are his refuge

கும்பிடு(ம்) புரந்தரன் பதி பெற (kumbidu purandharan padhipeRa) : the Indra prays to You reverentially and gets back his kingdom of Amaravati;

குஞ்சரி குயம் புயம் பெற அரக்கர் உரு மாள குன்று இடிய (kunjari kuyam buyam peRa arakkar uru mALa kundru idiya) : Devasena's bosom get your shoulders and demons get killed and the Krauncha Hill is blasted; kunjari: Devasena; kuyam: Breast/bosom; buyam: shoulders/arms;
Muruga busted the mountain in the battle with the demon Taraka, with his weapon vel, and killed Taraka's demon brothers hidden inside the mountain. After killing the demons, Muruga married Indra's daughter Devasena.

அம் பொனின் திருவரை கிண்கிணி (am ponin thiruvarai kiNkiNi) : The beautiful gold ornament on the pelvic girdle

கிணின் கிணின் கிணி என (kiNin kiNin kiNi ena) : makes the sound 'kiNin kiNin kiNi';

குண்டலம் அசைந்து இளம் குழைகள் ப்ரபை வீச (kuNdalam asaindhu iLam kuzhaikaLil prabai veesa) : the 'kundala' ornament on the ears sway and radiate brightness; குழை (kuzhai) : ear;

தந்தன தனந்தனந் தன என செம் சிறு சதங்கை கொஞ்சிட (thanthana thanan thanan thana ena chenchiRu chadhangai konjida) : the small, red anklets make endearing sound 'thanthana thanan thanan thana'

மணி தண்டைகள் கலின் கலின் கலி என ( maNi thaNdaigaL galin galin galin ena) : the bells in the 'thandai' anklets (different from the anklet mentioned above) clink 'galin galin galin'

திருவான சங்கரி மனம் குழைந்து உருக முத்தம் தர வரும் செழும் தளர் நடை சந்ததி (thiruvAna sankari manam kuzhaindhu uruga muththam thara varum chezhun thaLar nadai) : When muruga takes the baby steps towards his mother to kiss her, Shankari/Parvati - his mother becomes rapturously delighted;/

: You are worshipped all over the world, Oh SaravanA, the Great One!

About Tiruchendur
